Expeditions Alaska backpacking and adventure guide, Liz W.

Hello my name is Liz and I can’t wait to take you on an epic adventure 🙂

All About Me

Growing up in the sunshine state of Florida, my childhood was filled with the exhilaration of scuba diving and the serenity of sailing along the coast. These aquatic adventures instilled in me a deep appreciation for nature and a yearning for exploration.

After graduating from FAU with a degree in environmental science, I moved to Colorado to work as a wilderness ranger then I truly discovered my passion for the great outdoors. Surrounded by towering mountains and vast expanses of wilderness, I found myself drawn to the rugged beauty and untamed landscapes.

Working as a wilderness ranger opened my eyes to the profound importance of preserving our natural spaces and sparked a desire to further immerse myself in the wilderness. It was during this time that I embarked on a journey into the realm of avalanche science, recognizing the critical role it plays in ensuring the safety of backcountry enthusiasts.

Now, as I pursue an avalanche science program, my goal is to contribute to the field as a backcountry ski guide or avalanche forecaster, safeguarding those who seek adventure in the snow-covered peaks.

During the winter months, you’ll often find me carving fresh tracks through pristine powder, indulging in my passion for backcountry split boarding. The solitude and tranquility of the mountains fuel my spirit, offering a sense of freedom unlike any other.

In addition to snowboarding, I find joy in rock climbing, pushing myself to conquer new heights, and embark on overnight rafting trips, where I can immerse myself in the rhythm of the river and the majesty of the surrounding wilderness.

Each adventure fuels my soul and reinforces my connection to the natural world.

My experience as a wilderness ranger ignited within me a profound desire to share the wonders of the outdoors with others on an even grander scale. Inspired by the rugged beauty and pristine landscapes that surrounded me, I felt compelled to take my passion for wilderness exploration to new heights. Thus, driven by a sense of adventure and a longing for the untamed wilderness, I made the bold decision to embark on a new chapter of my journey as a backpacking guide in the vast and wild terrain of Alaska. In this remote and awe-inspiring setting, I aim to not only lead others on unforgettable adventures but also to foster a deep appreciation for the unspoiled beauty of our natural world.

The Rundown

Favorite Trip

My favorite trip remains etched in my memory as the breathtaking expedition along the Goat Trail in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This rugged trail, adorned with steep sections and you might encounter geodes along the route. This route challenged both my endurance and spirit. Yet, it rewarded every step with awe-inspiring vistas of glaciers, majestic mountains, and small canyons, painting a picture of natural splendor that stirred my soul and left an indelible mark on my adventurous spirit.

Happiness is ...

… the ups and downs of life they are like the ebb and flow of the tide, each moment shaping and enriching the tapestry of my existence. While challenges may test my resilience, they also offer invaluable lessons and opportunities for growth. Embracing life’s fluctuations with an open heart fills me with a profound sense of gratitude, for it is through these experiences that I find meaning, purpose, and ultimately, happiness.

On Safety

In my chosen field, ensuring the safety of others is not just a priority but a fundamental mission. Whether guiding adventurers through treacherous terrain or analyzing avalanche conditions, my unwavering focus is on safeguarding the well-being of every individual under my care. Through meticulous planning, continuous vigilance, and a deep commitment to preparedness, I strive to create environments where everyone can explore, learn, and thrive with peace of mind.

On Improvement

Getting out of your comfort zone is essential for personal growth and development. It’s where true transformation happens, as you challenge yourself to overcome fears, embrace uncertainty, and push beyond self-imposed limitations. Stepping into unfamiliar territory cultivates resilience, adaptability, and a greater sense of confidence in your abilities. By venturing beyond the familiar, you open yourself up to new experiences, perspectives, and opportunities that ultimately enrich your life and expand your horizons. Embracing discomfort as a catalyst for growth empowers you to live a more fulfilling and vibrant existence.
