MEET David

David Capo, Expeditions Alaska backpacking guide.

What’s behind that mountain? And why is it there? And how many peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches will I need to pack to find out? To me that’s what it’s all about.

How'd I Get Here?

Who’s this guy?

Hey Y’all! I hope you’re ready for an incredible trip. I’ve been in the wonderful world of guiding ever since I was old enough to haul gear bags for my climbing-instructor dad out to the crags of Arizona.

Since then I’ve worked just about everywhere in the lower 48: whitewater guiding in Utah, leading backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail, directing youth outdoor programming in Oregon, and canoe guiding in the Everglades.

On top of that I’ve taken a plethora of other odd jobs over the years ranging from riparian habitat restoration to raptor education, as is the way of the career seasonal guide.

My life outside of work has been pretty similar! When I was 18 I hitch-hiked from San Diego to Miami, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of my life.

I’ve always been a deeply curious person and there is, as they say, no better teacher than experience. That said, I also have an Associate of Science that I earned while working as a Crew Trainer at the United States Space and Rocket Center. I’ve since gone back to school (after many years of hiatus) to pursue a BA in Environmental Science with a focus on field studies.

This will be the third summer I’ve been able to come to Alaska. Of all the places I’ve been none has run away with my heart quite as much, and I cannot wait to share the beauty and wonder of this place with you.

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where none intrudes, By the deep Sea, and music in its roar: I love not Man the less, but Nature more” ~ Lord Byron

Safety

I believe that a safe trip is a fun trip, and your safety is my number one priority. That starts long before we ever hit the trail. I’ll make sure you’re fully prepared for what ever may come our way before we leave, and work with you throughout the trip to ensure the best experience nature will give us.

Field Philosophy

But … Why? Working with student groups it’s a question I got a lot. “Why is that here? Why is that there? What kind of (plant/animal/mineral/unusually shaped cloud) is that?”

I love those questions. That’s what exploration is for!

About David

Carl Says

David is the first new guide I hired this year. His experience, his savvy, the questions he asks, the responses he gives, all point to temperament and leadership.

That matters.

David has good backcountry skills, his focus is where it needs to be, and we’re excited to have him along as part of this crew.
