Everyone should visit ANWR at least a couple times. An amazing place. The caribou herd roam, the polar bears stalk the sea ice of the coastal shoreline and the birds come back every summer.
We run a number of tours including Rafting and photography tours to the Refuge. Always a blast to return.
Hey folks, A nice short video of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from We Are The Arctic a grassroots coalition whose mission is to raise awareness for and protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Excellent cinematography that highlights the beauty and the wildness of this special place. It’s always a treat to return to […]
Week-long Alaska hiking trips require different planning than typical trails. The Goat Trail in Wrangell-St. Elias offers serious adventure without extreme difficulty. Denali’s Wyoming Hills demand flexibility with permits. Resurrection Pass provides road-accessible trails, while the Chilkoot crosses into Canada by train.
Best hike? My next one.
Large adult male polar bears can weigh over 1400lbs. Seriously? How big? We’ve all heard polar bears are the largest terrestrial carnivore, right? We’ll side-step the rather silly idea of labelling Ursus maritimus (Sea bear), a marine mammal, as a “land-based carnivore” for the moment. Instead consider the point behind it. Polar bears are the […]
Hey Folks, It’s probably a good time for another polar bear photo, don’t ya think? This young fella was curious enough to venture out, albeit cautiously, over the think, newly formed ice of the Beaufort Sea, to come in for a closer look. I wanted to get a nice low angle, and give a sense […]
Hey Folks, A week in arctic Alaska, photographing Nanuq, the magnificent polar bear? An awesome, awesome trip. I took 3 people up earlier this month for a fantastic week, where we were so lucky to get to spend time up close and personal with polar bears; literally, dozens and dozens of polar bears. US F&WS […]
50 photos for 50 years! Dec 6, 2010, marks the 50th anniversary of the Arctic National Wildlife refuge, or ANWR. Over 19 million acres of wild lands, the refuge is a treasure, home to thousands of creatures and features; the caribou herds, the Brooks Mountains, the broad coastal plain, migratory birds and countless other gifts to this world. Video of photos and music.
A Brooks Range backpacking trip (and rafting trip) through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Camping on alluvial fans, hiking ridgelines at 2am, chasing light that never quite dies.
Photography in arctic summer means shifting your clock to the wee hours. They don’t call this the land of the midnight sun for nothing.
Photo of a Pacific loon (Gavia pacifica) from the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, near the Canning River.
Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) kits, or young, playing and play-fighting, sunset, on the coastal plain, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, ANWR, Alaska.
