Hey Folks,

Anyone coming up to Alaska this winter? Here’s a good reason why.

The Wrangell mountains, in al their alpenglow-ing glory are second to none in the winter.

Here I’m looking across the Copper Winter toward the Wrangell Mountain range. From the left the peaks you can see are Mt. Sanford (in the background), Mt Drum, Mt. Snyder, Mt. Zanetti, and Mt Wrangell at the right hand edge of the frame.

The mountain heights are as follows.

Mt. Sanford 16 327′

Mt. Drum 12 010′

Mt Snyder 8 000+

Mt. Zanetti 13 009′

Mt Wrangell 14 163′

Just out of sight (in this picture), to the right (south) of Mt Wrangell is Mt Blackburn, 16 391′.

That’s an awful lot of altitude.

In winter the setting sun can be sublime on these mountains. Watching the tonal shift as the sun sinks beneath the horizon behind me is always a treat. There’s nothing quite like it in the world.

Cheers

Carl
