I use a tripod as I don’t have a monopod but I think a monopod is fine.
It depends a lot on the lens and gear, etc. My longest lens is a 500mm f4 which I use on a tripod most of the time, I never handhold it. I always use my 80-400mm handheld though.
The answer will depend on all the rest of your gear and your personal preference.
